Lovely Litsea

Louise

Litsea cubeba is also known as may Chang or sometimes exotic verbena, it comes from the lauraceae plant family which grows mainly in warm temperate and tropical regions, especially Southeast Asia and South America.

It is a small tropical tree with fragrant lemongrass-scented flowers and leaves. The small fruits are shaped like peppers, or lanterns from which the name cubeba was derived. It is the distillation of the fruits that create this beautiful fresh oil that smells like opal fruits (or starburst) sweets depending on your age.

In Chinese medicine it is used to treat dysmenorrhoea, indigestion, low back pain, headaches, chills, and travel sickness. The Taiwanese aborigines used Litsea Cubeba in culinary preparation thanks to its hot and spicy taste while the may chang flowers were also used in medicinal tea.

Today aromatherapists use the essential oil for it’s antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and deodorising properties. It is also known to stimulate the digestive system, been useful as a disinfectant whilst also being insecticidal and sedative. Topically when diluted Litsea is used to treat acne, dermatitis, greasy skin and spots.

Its enticing scent soothes the nervous system and helps us express our emotions in a more constructive manner. It’s fresh lemony scent make litsea cubeba is the perfect antidote for seasonal blues, stress, anger and irritability. It helps get rid of negative emotions and promotes relaxation, mental clarity and restful sleep.

One of the main components of Litsea Cubeba essential oil is citral – which makes up roughly over 70% of the oil. This can explain why litsea is used so much for its antibacterial and antiseptic qualities and in particular for infections. However aldehydes can be sensitising if used at high concentrations so use with caution on hypersensitive and damaged skin and on children under 2 years old.

It is a very versatile oil that is fairly inexpensive and blends so well with many other essential oils including Lavender, Basil, Marjoram, Orange and Mandarin.
